Ben Carmichael is a Project Executive with our Alabama Healthcare Division with more than 15 years’ experience in the industry. He’s currently leading multiple healthcare projects across the southeast. Get to know more about him in 10 questions.
What’s your day-to-day look like?
Every day is completely different and offers its own unique challenges. That is what I love about this industry.
What’s the one lesson you’ve learned in this industry that’s stuck with you?
Having good working relationships with all parties on the project delivers success. People will go the extra mile to hit a deadline and find solutions if you have a strong working relationship.
What’s the last thing you did to help make a project run smoother?
We had a few opportunities on one of my last projects to help overcome challenges with a lack of manpower and resources in a remote area. We resolved this by working together and holding multiple weekly meetings to help track and push the work to the finish line.
What are you working on now?
I am working on a few senior care clinics in Jacksonville, a four-story hospital addition in Fairhope, a few hospital renovations around Birmingham, and finishing up two hospitals in Georgia.
How did you get started in the industry/get started on your career path?
I started out early in high school taking drafting, auto-cad, and electrical courses offered by the partnering technical school. I worked a few summers with trade partners and general contractors and knew this was the field I wanted to pursue.
What’s your most memorable project/career highlight?
I would have to say the most memorable project was a hard bid hospital project we won in the middle of rural New Mexico. This was a challenging project halfway across the country and our team did an excellent job.
What’s the best part of your job?
The reason I got into this industry is because I like to build and see things go from planning to finished project. I also enjoy the problem solving from all the challenges and obstacles that each unique project sends your way.
What’s your favorite band?
Overall, I would have to say Led Zeppelin.
What’s your hidden talent?
Guitar.
What’s your favorite movie?
The Departed.
